Down Syndrome Association of South Texas (DSASTX) provides a wide array of services and support through ongoing programs and social/recreational events for children with Down syndrome and their families.

Even though our community continues to become more accepting and inclusive for individuals with Down syndrome and other disabilities, they still face barriers to a fully-inclusive life due to lack of accessibility, lack of understanding and lack of awareness.

Purpose:

Empower and support individuals with Down syndrome and their families to access resources, engage with their community, and progress toward self-actualization.

The DSASTX Mission:

Provide lifelong services and support to individuals with Down syndrome and their families to optimize well-being, develop rewarding relationships, and foster inclusion in the community.

Children’s Programs:

Kid's Connection

This program takes place the second and fourth Thursdays of the month from 6:00 -
7:30 pm. We welcome our 6-12 year-old kids with Down syndrome and other disabilities (and like-aged siblings) to join us for fun, games, and friendship. Activities include, but are not limited to, arts & crafts with Artful Start (a local nonprofit), both indoor and outdoor games and sports, dancing, imaginative play, and movies. The objective for Kid's Connection is for attendees to gain or deepen an existing relationship with a peer, as well as increase socialization and engagement.

Music & Movement

Every Saturday from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm, children ages 0-6 with Down syndrome
and their like-aged siblings join us for a different theme and type of music, alternating focus on the musical instruments and physical movements for the little ones while combining the two for older participants. The DSASTX expects participants to increase and then maintain participation and engagement, as well as deepen an existing relationship with a peer.

Parent and Me Open Play

Parents and preschool-aged children are invited to join us for safe and inclusive play dates on Thursdays from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm in our play room. Age-appropriate, sensory toys and activities are available to encourage interaction. The DSASTX expects that child participants will increase engagement with peers, while parents create and deepen existing relationships with other families.

Teen Club

Every Wednesday from 6:00 - 8:30 pm, we welcome our teens with Down syndrome and
other disabilities (and like-aged siblings) to join us for an evening of fun, friendship, and creativity. Activities include dance, fitness, cooking, and arts & crafts. Teens and adults with Down syndrome and other disabilities are provided a safe and inclusive environment where they are encouraged to grow and self-direct programming. The DSASTX expects to see increased peer interaction from participants, as well as to learn and demonstrate socially and age-appropriate behavior.
