Visionworks, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established by Camp Discovery volunteers. Camp discovery was formerly sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS), but in 2013 the ACS announced that it was no longer sponsoring pediatric oncology camps nationwide. As a result of this decision, the ACS graciously offered VisionWorks the opportunity to place camp under their umbrella. Camp is a special world for children affected by cancer from across the state of Texas between the ages of 7-16. The main purpose of Camp Discovery is to provide these wonderful children a fun and “normal” camp experience, an experience they would not be able to get at a traditional residential camp. However, besides having fun, other things take place like learning new skills, individual growth, and personal development.

Mission

To enhance the lives of children and their families who are dealing with a life-threatening illness through
residential camping and other outdoor experiences designed to positively affect their emotional, physical
and spiritual needs.

Experience

Speak with any long-time volunteers and they could tell you wonderful stories about what they had seen at Camp Discovery. For example, children experience perhaps the best week of their lives that is full of swimming, fishing, climbing, canoeing, laughing, dancing, singing, horseback riding, and simply spending time with others who can relate to their situation.

Camp Discovery

Camp is a special world for children affected by cancer from across the state of Texas between the ages of 7-16. The main purpose of Camp Discovery is to provide these wonderful children a fun and “normal” camp experience, an experience they would not be able to get at a traditional residential camp. Camp Discovery is staffed solely by volunteers. Currently, approximately 74% of our volunteers are cancer survivors, with over 50% of those being former campers. The camp is abundantly staffed with volunteer nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians. Many of these medical professionals provide treatment to our campers on a regular basis away from camp, and claim that it is refreshing to see them outside the hospital environment.
2

Camp Brave Hearts

Monthly in-hospital camps held at Methodist Children’s Hospital in San Antonio, TX. These monthly camps provide four days of fun and respite for children in the pediatric oncology clinic as well as those children in in-patient care battling life-threatening illnesses. Our goal with Camp Brave Hearts is to bring the joy of camp to those who are unable to attend our other camp sessions due to their medical situations.

VisionWorks Family Camps

A weekend camp experience for any family that has a child currently battling cancer or who has battled cancer in recent years. The weekend is full of activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, horseback riding, boating, campfires, archery, talent shows, and many other fun activities. There is also time for the parents to hang out with each other or for them to go off by themselves while the children are supervised by our volunteers.
4

Camp Common Ground

A weekend camp experience for families with a child who has both a cancer diagnosis and an additional special need, such as autism, Down Syndrome, or physical disabilities. This is a collaborative effort with Camp CAMP. Similar to our other family camps, families can participate in an array of camping activities, as well as times of connectivity for the parents who are dealing with similar circumstances.
5

Camp Firefly

A bereavement weekend camp experience for those families who have suffered the loss of a child to cancer. While this has all the components of a typical family camp weekend, there is also a time to remember the child who lost their battle with cancer. Amid all the fun camp activities, there is opportunity for these families to be around each other and heal as much as possible through their interactions.
6

VisionWorks/Camp Discovery Christmas Party:

A Christmas party held at Morgan’s Wonderland every December for any family in Central and South Texas that has a child battling cancer, has a child that has battled cancer, or has a child that passed away from cancer. This is a joint venture between VisionWorks/Camp Discovery and Survivor Alert. For several hours on a Sunday evening in December we rent the park and offer it exclusively to these families.
