Clarity Child Guidance Center

larity Child Guidance Center exists to transform the lives of children and families. They are the only nonprofit treatment center in San Antonio and South Texas that specializes in children ages 3-17 who suffer from serious mental health problems. Their inpatient and outpatient programs include a range of services, from crisis stabilization, to psychiatric evaluations, to ongoing therapy.

Clarity has the region’s largest staff of children’s mental health professionals at our two, family friendly campuses and several satellite locations. As a United Way agency, we provide greatly needed mental health care for children who could not otherwise afford to receive treatment.

Clarity Child Guidance Center services include outpatient care, day treatment services, acute inpatient care at our 66- bed children’s psychiatric hospital and emergency services in our Crisis Assessment Center. Nearly 9,000 kids will receive care in 2017, with over 30,000 outpatient appointments and 17,500 hospitalization nights. Wraparound supports include case management for families as well as education continuation for our patients via our on-campus Northside ISD school. Play with Purpose™, our art, music and play therapy program is integrated into our treatment plans.

Clarity Child Guidance Center’s mission is to help children, adolescents, and families overcome the disabling effects of mental illness and improve their ability to function successfully at home, at school, and in the community.

Their model, called ClarityCare™ is based on a simple principle: children do well when they can. As a result, they collaboratively problem solve with the children in their care. They also involve the entire family in the course of treatment through family therapy. They know that when a child comes to them, the whole family needs to heal.

What Makes Clarity Different?

They are trying to remove these three barriers to families getting the treatment their child needs.

Clarity CGC developed an anti-stigma campaign called One in Five Minds for the one in five kids who has an emotional, behavioral or mental illness. One in Five Minds has advocacy resources online and a school-based program called Strong Minds Happy Hearts where parents, caregivers and educators can work together to learn more about metal illness, substance abuse and the resources available to help kids. Ability to Pay for Treatment

More than 80 percent of the patients at Clarity CGC live at or below the Federal Poverty Level. Additionally, many people who have health insurance learn their mental health benefits are typically lacking. Clarity CGC accepts Medicaid, CHIP and most private insurance. Clarity CGC never turns away a family based on their ability to pay.

Access to Care

Clarity CGC is training the next generation of caregivers and is a teaching hospital for the division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of UT Health- San Antonio. Their partnership with the Pediatrics program at the Baylor College of Medicine helps train the future pediatricians to better help their patients who might be experiencing mental illness. Almost every nursing program does a rotation at Clarity CGC and we provide continuing education for clinicians across the region through our free monthly CEUs and Claritycon™ their annual day-and-a-half long symposium on children’s mental health.

The pinwheel is a symbol of hope and joy for children with mental illness. When the pinwheel is installed in a windy spot, it comes to life. Coming forward and sharing our personal stories about mental illness can be the breeze that turns stigma inti support, and in turn, provide children with the help they so desperately need.

The I truly believe that my daughter felt a sense of peace at Clarity Child Guidance Center. The staff and professionals treated her with dignity and respect, and I felt they cared about helping us find the best path forward for her.
