In Loving Memory of Carlos Alvarez

October 17, 1950 – April 09, 2024

Carlos Alvarez, founder of The Gambrinus Company and a distinguished San Antonio businessman and philanthropist, revolutionized the beer industry in the United States. Born in Mexico City, he was a proud graduate of the Monterrey Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree in biochemical engineering. In 1981, Carlos introduced the Mexican brand Corona to Texas by hand-selling the beer to Austin bars and restaurants. By 1997, Corona had become the top imported beer in the U.S.

Through his success, he became a leading humanitarian and philanthropic figure in San Antonio. He dedicated himself to supporting educational causes, as well as advocating for culture and the arts, in addition to many other charitable causes. In recognition of his significant impact on the industry and philanthropic efforts, Carlos was inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame in 2010 alongside Mr. Harvey Najim.

We at the Najim Charitable Foundation deeply cherish his inspiring legacy. His visionary leadership and philanthropic spirit will continue to have a profound impact on our community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones – his wife Malú Alvarez, his daughters Malú Alvarez and Carla Brozovich, his son-in-law John Brozovich, and his two grandchildren Carlos Brozovich and Carla Brozovich.

We will miss you dearly.
